Consonus Offers Free Data Center Hosting Services
Consonus, Inc., a provider of data center and managed services, today announced that it is offering free web hosting services to businesses affected by Hurricane Katrina.
To qualify for aid, businesses must be based in one of the three states of Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama. Consonus claims that although its data center is large enough to support other regional businesses, the free offer includes one rack per business with a 20 Amp circuit. Significant discounts will be available for qualifying customers with larger space requirements. Consonus' fault tolerant data centers are designed to be protected from natural and manmade disasters, allowing these companies to conduct daily business without further risk, claims the company. The free services will be available to businesses till the end of the year.
"Consonus is committed to doing everything we can to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina," said Daniel Milburn, Chief Operating Officer, Consonus. "By offering free web hosting services to companies that have been affected in the area, we hope to alleviate some of the hardships they are experiencing, while trying to rebuild their businesses and lives."

Portal bid drives eBay Skype deal
At first glance, auction giant eBay and net phone firm Skype seem to have little in common apart from the fact that both do almost all of their business online.
eBay is a giant marketplace used by more than 100 million people to buy and sell all manner of things to each other.
In comparison, Skype has about 53 million users who make cheap phone calls via the service that relies on the net to carry the conversations.
Certainly, many analysts have questioned why eBay splashed out $2.6bn (£1.4bn) to buy Skype.

FastServers Goes All In at HostingCon
Since Web Hosting Expo in 2001, the hosting business has been more on the periphery of Internet and telecommunications conferences, somewhat removed from the spotlight. HostingCon 2005 (hostingcon.com), held earlier this month in Chicago, was the first conference in four years to make Web hosting its primary focus, and it presented hosts with a unique marketing opportunity.
The exhibit hall at HostingCon featured nearly 50 booths and included some rather elaborate displays, such as Microsoft's miniature theatre and EV1Servers's video bowling simulation. But the booth that drew the largest amount of attention belonged to Chicago-headquartered FastServers.Net (fastservers.net). The company set up a makeshift casino, complete with blackjack and poker tables and FastServers employees sitting in as dealers. The company also hosted an after hours party at a posh nightspot on the last night of the event, opening the bar to all its guests.

Remixing the Data Center
The way we build things has changed. And the changes occurred while we weren't looking. In fact, some of us haven't acknowledged the changes and run the risk of being left behind – or losing out on the advantages these changes may bring. The world of the remix – a borrowing and re-building process typically applied to music – has grown to include development in technology, inspiring work that directly impacts the data center.
You may not think of remixing as a data center concept, but it is. Open-source is the software branch of the new remix culture, in which one person builds upon the works of others to create something new, improved or altogether different.

The FTC and Internet Law
There is not one distinct body of law that governs Web hosts’ rights and responsibilities. Nor is there one government agency charged with policing the Internet. This issue is relatively unique to the Internet, since the laws and regulations that actually – or may – apply come from many areas. Confronted with what appears to be a thicket of unconnected laws, it is understandable that many Web hosts’ legal compliance efforts are muddled, contradictory, or non-existent.
In the past, responses to Internet problems have come from legislative bodies, whether state legislatures or the US Congress. In recent years the Federal Trade Commission has taken an increasingly prominent role in responding to these problems. In some cases, such as with CAN-Spam, the response has been congressionally mandated. In others it has been based on the FTC’s jurisdiction over unfair and deceptive trade practices.
